I know there's a film and book 'based' on the song, but i really don't think, personally, the event's of the book/film match the song.
I really don't think Billie Joe in the song, was gay. I don't think he commited suicide because he had a homosexual encounter.
I think Billie Joe and Bobbie were secretly dating, because her family didn't approve of him. Her mother seemed to like the minister, so maybes she thought he was more suitable for Bobbie.
I think Bobbie was pregnant. That's what they were arguing about after church. And i think the baby was what the pair threw off the bridge. The baby had died, and they couldn't tell anyone, so disposed of the body on their own.
And Billie Joe died because a) he was devastated about the baby dying and b) chose that bridge so he could be close to the baby.
I know Bobbie Gentry hasn't revealed the story behind the song, but it's good that,40+ years after the song was released, people are still talking about it.
